Champaign seeks first win over Bloomington

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- With an 8-1 record on their own floor, home court has been a big advantage for the Champaign Swarm this season. They will need it when the host the Bloomington Flex tonight for their final home contest of the regular season.

The league-leading Flex (12-2) are the only team Champaign has not been able to solve. Bloomington has won all three contests, including Thurdsay’s 103-93 victory. Although both teams have secured playoff spots and the league’s top spot is up for grabs, Bloomington owns the head-to-head tiebreaker in playoff seeding. Bloomington is 1 ½ games ahead of Champaign for first place in the league.

Justin Bocot continues his hold as the MPBA’s top scorer with 27.6 points per game. He poured in 28 on Thursday against Champaign. Anthony Slack has taken over as the league’s top rebounder with 11.5 per game, and nobody has made more 3-pointers than C.J. Hampton (37). For as many offensive weapons the Flex have, their defense is the best in the league, holding opponents to 93.2 points per game.

Champaign has made solid additions to their lineup midway through the season. Avery Smith has 24.1 points per game in eight contests and has scored 30 and 21 points respectively in his two games against Bloomington. Malcolm Griffin scored a team-high 24 points Thursday night in just his third game with the Swarm.  Mark St. Fort is the top rebounder with 8.1 per contest, and is third in offensive rebounds.

Tonight is Champaign Park District Appreciation Night. The game tips at 7 p.m. tonight at Parkland College. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students, kids and seniors. Children five and under are free.

The game will also be broadcast live on www.theMPBA.com. Scott Beatty provides play-by-play and Craig Fata has analysis.
