Big third quarter propels St. Louis to sixth straight win

 

CHICAGO -- The St. Louis RiverSharks used a monstrous third quarter on their way to a 135-119 win over the Windy City Groove on Saturday afternoon at the Kroc Center in Chicago.

The RiverSharks (9-2) pulled even with the Bloomington Flex for first place in the Midwest Professional Basketball Association with their sixth straight win. Both teams are one-half game ahead of the Champaign Swarm.

Windy City (2-10) hung with St. Louis for the first half and held a 67-64 advantage at halftime. But Jerrold Brooks' layup with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter gave St. Louis the lead for good. The RiverSharks surged ahead by stringing together runs of 28-10 and 16-2 in a 46-point third quarter.

St. Louis guard Terry Leake had a game-high 34 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Brooks, Marcus Goode and Brandon Hogg each had 20-plus point performances. Keith DeWitt had the lone double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Lavante Douglas led the Windy City effort with 22 points, going 9-for-12 from the field. Chris Dillard had 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kenyon Smith dished out seven assists along with 16 points.

Although the RiverSharks were at the free-throw line 53 times, they missed 20 attempts. But Windy City made just one three-point basket in 14 tries.

Windy City lost for the 10th time and can do no better than .500 for the season.

Each team's next opponent is the Champaign Swarm. Windy City hosts Champaign at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 and St. Louis travels to Champaign for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, March 7.
