Lima still alive despite loss

ST. LOUIS – With a win over the Lima Express last night, the Pontiac 66ers can clinch the top overall seed in the 2016 Midwest Professional Basketball Association playoffs with a win today over the Chicago Blues.

Pontiac edged out Lima 114-109 at Pontiac High School Saturday behind 28 points from Alex Marzette. Alfonzo Houston added 22, while four other 66ers scored in double figures. Jody Hill booked 34 for Lima, as Kyle Meyer pitched in 24. Cordaryl Ballard added 18 and pulled down nine rebounds.

The loss was Lima’s eighth in its last nine games, the last four of which have been by a total of nine points.

If Pontiac reaches twelve wins today in its regular-season finale, they will be the only team in the MPBA to have reached that plateau—every other team has at least five losses.  But the task will not be an easy one.

Last night’s loss does not eliminate the Express from playoff contention. If they win out and the St. Louis RiverSharks lose out, both teams would finish 7-9, and split the head-to-head tiebreaker 1-1. The third tiebreaker would be fewest defensive points allowed.
