Gateway's trademark defense shuts down St. Louis

February 20, 2016

ST. LOUIS – The Gateway Steam survived some early-game sluggishness by relying on their trademark aggressive defense, and cruised to a 99-91 win over the St. Louis RiverSharks at Emerson Performance Center at Harris-Stowe State University Saturday night.

A steady stream of Harris-Stowe students flowed into the EPC to watch the Midwest Professional Basketball Association’s first games in St. Louis in the 2016 season.  The crowd saw the Steam jump out to a 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 44-35 lead at half despite 19 first-half points from St. Louis’ Bruce Massey.

At the end of three quarters, the Steam pushed the lead to 80-60.

A Terrell Williams basket early in the fourth got the Steam lead to 22, but the RiverSharks would not go away.  A pair of Justin Bocot free throws cut the lead to six with 58.8 seconds remaining in the game, however, St. Louis would get no closer.

Anthony Goode led the Steam with 19 points, to go along with five steals.  He was one of four Gateway players scoring in double figures.  Jayvonte Hughes had three of the Steam’s nine blocked shots.  Lonnel Johnson tallied five assists for Gateway (3-3).

Bruce Massey led St. Louis (3-3) with 37 points, while Justin Bocot added 19.

Both the RiverSharks and Steam are back in action tomorrow with the RiverSharks hosting the Champaign Swarm at 1:05 p.m. while the Steam will host the Pontiac 66ers at 4:05 p.m. Both games can be seen live on MPBA.tv.
