Champaign aims for season-sweep of Chicago

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- With 80 percent of their season complete, the playoff-bound Champaign Swarm may feel good about a 12-4 record, a recent win over first-place Bloomington and a hold on second place in the MPBA.

But chances are the Swarm won’t coast through the last lap.

The final four games of the year are on the road, starting with their final trip to Chicago to face the Force at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Kroc Center. Although the Force are mired in an eight-game losing streak and own the league’s worst record at 3-13, they still have hopes for the leagues’ final playoff spot, trailing Gateway by three games. And although the Swarm have won all three contests between the clubs this year, the last two were by just three points.

A trio of guards lead the Chicago Force. With an impressive ability to create space between himself and his defender, Derrick McDonald averages 20.9 points per game and nearly 10 rebounds per contest, while Tremell Adams adds 20.5 points per game. Darius Smith (14.8 ppg) continues to pester defenses with his league-best 54 steals and is also the top distributor with 4.1 assists per game. Down low, Ronnie Carlwell is the league’s best shot blocker.

Champaign guard Avery Smith continues to be the Swarm’s top scorer (23.0 ppg), despite playing through an injury in the last three games. Aaron Weaver is fifth in the league in scoring (19.4), and Mark St. Fort is the fifth leading rebounder (8.1 rpg). Malcolm Griffin has started all four games he’s played since joining the team this month, averaging 15.8 points per game.

Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on www.theMPBA.com. Alvin Washington provides play-by-play and Scott Beatty has analysis.
